Blessing and Christening done, ready for the maiden voyage!

The grand handover ceremony of China-aid Tug and Barge was held on 19 November at the KNSL Wharf. H.E. Ambassador Tang Songgen was very delighted to join Hon. Vice President Teuea Toatu, Hon. Minister of MICT Tekeeua Tarati and many honorable and distinguished guests to witness this historical moment.

HM Tekeeua Tarati expressed sincere appreciation on behalf of Kiribati government and people to China for donating this Tug and Barge, making the dream into reality and turning vision into tangible assets. The HM also applauded the excellent and professional work by Ningxing shipyard. KNSL Chairman Teieka Kaoma and CEO John Rounds both thanked China for this tremendous gift which will be a game changer for Kiribati transportation. They emphasized the critical reasons for Tug and Barge based on the unique conditions of inter-island shipping and expressed high expectation for the China-aid Landing Craft which will arrive in the middle of next year.

In his remarks, Ambassador Tang said that the Tug and Barge is a perfect example of the Belt and Road Initiative and Global Development Initiative and in line with the KV20. The Tug and Barge was specially designed by KNSL experts which makes it perfectly fit the actual needs of Kiribati. The vessels will evidently improve the connectivity among islands, drive economic development and enhance people’s livelihood. It’s our common wish and shared vision that more projects like Tug and Barge will be carried out so as to bring more tangible benefits to Kiribati people.

The Tug and Barge was officially handed over by Ambassador Tang to HVP Teuea Toatu and HM Tekeeua Tarati, blessed and christened by KUC moderator Rev Taateti Taum’a and received traditional blessings from Madame Tuun Tarati and Madame Tabuaka Nauan.

Finally, great appreciation to everyone who have initiated, contributed and supported this important project. Wish the Tug and Barge all the best and hope everyone enjoy their services!
